The ratchet system—made of a metal housing, rotating handle, and spring-loaded pawl—is the strap's defining feature. To tension, feed the webbing through the ratchet and pump the handle; each pump tightens the webbing, while the pawl clicks into the ratchet's teeth to prevent slipping.
 
This design lets you adjust tension incrementally, suiting both delicate and heavy cargo. Once set, the pawl acts as a fail-safe: the webbing stays locked until you lift the pawl to release it, eliminating cargo shifts from road vibrations or sudden stops.

The webbing (flat band) is typically made of polyester or a polyester-nylon blend, chosen for industrial strength and wear resistance. Polyester has low stretch, keeping tension consistent during transport, and resists UV rays, moisture, and chemicals.
 
Its strength is measured by working load limit (WLL) (safe regular weight) and break strength (3x WLL, for safety buffer). The webbing is often tightly woven to prevent tearing, with reinforced stitching at stress points (where it attaches to the ratchet or fittings) for longevity. Its wide, flat shape also distributes weight evenly, avoiding cargo damage.

End fittings (e.g., S-hooks, J-hooks, flat hooks, D-rings) connect the strap to anchor points (truck tie-down rings, trailer hooks). They're made of heavy-gauge steel—often galvanized or zinc-coated—to resist bending, breaking, and corrosion.
 
Fittings are permanently attached: either sewn to the webbing with heavy-duty thread or crimped with a metal sleeve, ensuring no separation under load. Some have safety latches (e.g., spring clips on S-hooks) to lock onto anchors, adding security for high-speed or uneven transport.
